Kurdish Witnesses Testify Against Saddam During Baghdad Trial ------------------------------------------------------------- http://enews.voanews.com/t?r=279&ctl=139CCA7:A6F02AD83191E1603FDA92903CCCE7AC9574F7DCC14957C0 Kurdish woman described chemical weapons attack on her village nearly two decades ago during Wednesday's session Witness Adiba Oula Bayez testifies, WednesdayAn Iraqi Kurdish woman described a chemical weapons attack on her village nearly two decades ago during Wednesday's session of Saddam Hussein's trial for crimes against humanity. Kurds' testimony about poison-gas attacks and other brutal treatment by Saddam's government has filled the first two days of the trial which opened on Tuesday. Genocide charges against Saddam and six co-defendants arise from Operation Anfal - a military operation in 1987 and 1988 that wiped out dozens of Kurdish villages and killed 180 thousand men, women and children. The current proceedings are the second round of charges brought against Saddam since he was deposed in 2003. A verdict is expected in mid-October from his first trial, earlier this year, on charges of ordering about 150 Shi'ite villagers to be killed following an assassination attempt against him in 1982. If Saddam is found guilty, he could be sentenced to death. Some information for this report was provided by AFP, AP and Reuters. .
