Karen Hughes takes a closer look at a historic Koran on display as she visits the Islamic Art Museum in Kuala LumpurKaren Hughes, the U.S. Undersecretary of State for Public Diplomacy, said Sunday that mainly Muslim Malaysia can play a pivotal role in confronting terror. Ms. Hughes says Malaysia is an example to the rest of the world of how different cultures and religions can live together in tolerance. Ms. Hughes, a former senior aide to President Bush at the White House, arrived in Malaysia for a two-day goodwill visit following a related visit to Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim nation. She encountered strong opposition in both countries to the war in Iraq. However, Ms. Hughes says, President Bush's decision to topple Saddam Hussein was made in the best interests of global security. The American envoy is due to meet with Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Najib Razak on Monday. As Washington's public diplomacy chief, Ms. Hughes has been trying to polish the United States' global image, which has been tarnished in the Muslim world and elsewhere by the Iraq war and other disputes.
