Nalchik





Russian Interior Ministry troops in Nalchik Friday, Oct. 14,
2005Russian security forces say they have freed all remaining hostages
held by militants who launched a major attack on the southern Russian
town of Nalchik, Thursday.

Gennady Gubin, Prime Minister of the Kabardino-Balkaria republic, is
quoted by Interfax as saying all resistance by the militants has been
put down, and that security forces are hunting for any gunmen who
might still be hiding.

Earlier, security forces stormed a police station where hostages were
being held overnight, killing eight of their captors.

Chechen separatists have claimed responsibility for Thursday's attacks
on police stations and government buildings that sparked clashes
between security forces and militants. At least 85 people, including
61 militants, were killed.

Kabardino-Balkaria republic borders Chechnya. Russian troops have been
battling Chechen separatists for about 10 years.
