this year's Nobel Prize for literature

Announcing the award in Stockholm Thursday, the Swedish Academy
described Mr. Pinter as an author "who restored theater to its basic
elements - an enclosed space and unpredictable dialogue, where people
are at the mercy of each other."

The 75-year-old Londoner, son of a Jewish dressmaker, is one of
Britain's best-known playwrights for works such as "The Birthday
Party" and "The Caretaker."



Mr. Pinter will receive more than $1 million in prize money.
