The last round ended in October with little progress amid escalating violence in Darfur and infighting within the region's main rebel group, the Sudanese Liberation Movement, SLM. The rival rebel leaders, Minni Minnawi and Abdel Wahid Nur, have agreed to put aside their differences and are in Abuja for the talks. The African Union said Monday it hopes this round of talks will be "decisive." Negotiators say the talks are aimed at reaching a permanent cease-fire agreement and settling issues on power and wealth-sharing in Darfur. Fighting has continued in Darfur despite the talks.
