Markers commemorating U.S. casualties in Iraq are shown on display
near Independence Hall in Philadelphia, PennsylvaniaAmericans are
celebrating Veterans Day, a national holiday honoring all men and
women who have served in the U.S. military.

The main annual event marking the day takes place at Arlington
National Cemetery just outside Washington. Vice President Dick Cheney
will participate in a wreath laying ceremony at the cemetery's Tomb of
the Unknowns.

President Bush will honor veterans at an event Friday in Wilkes-Barre,
Pennsylvania 350 kilometers north of Washington where he will also
talk about the war on terror.

Veteran's Day was first celebrated in the United States in 1919 as
Armistice Day, honoring those who served in the first World War.

The holiday was renamed Veterans Day in 1954 when the observance was
broadened to include all men and women who have served in the U.S.
armed forces.
