Election officials in Chad say voters have approved a referendum that
would allow President Idriss Deby to run for re-election.

Officials say preliminary results from the June 6 referendum show that
about 78 percent of those voting approved a measure to do away with a
two-term limit in the constitution. The officials say about 71 percent
of eligible voters turned out for the election.

Opposition parties had urged voters to boycott the vote.

President Deby has been in office since 1990 when he seized power in
the central African nation. He stood for election in 1996 and again in
2001.
