Mr. Wolfowitz traveled to Africa from London, where finance ministers from the Group of Eight industrialized nations announced a plan Saturday to cancel more than $40 billion in debts owed by 18 of the world's poorest nations, most of them in Africa. A reporter for Associated Press in Abuja, the Nigerian capital, says Mr. Wolfowitz praised the successful outcome of the G8 meeting and said the debt agreement is a very important development for the people of Africa. Mr. Wolfowitz, who took up his post as World Bank president less than two weeks ago, has made reducing poverty in Africa a major priority of the institution. President Bush and other leaders of the G8 nations are expected to formally approve the debt plan at a summit next month in Scotland. Some information for this report provided by AFP and AP. .
