Four bombs exploded Sunday morning in and around public buildings in Ahvaz, the capital of the Khuzestan province, 550 kilometers southwest of Teheran. The deputy governor of the province, Gholam Reza Hariati, said he believes the bombings were intended to undermine public participation in Friday's presidential elections. There have been no claims of responsibility for the attacks. Targets of the blasts included the governor's office, two local government offices and a housing complex for employees of state-run media. Two months ago in Ahvaz, police arrested more than 250 demonstrators who were protesting reports of a plan to decrease the proportion of Arabs in the area.
