Afghan officials say 10 policemen have been killed in an ambush by
suspected Taleban rebels.

Authorities said Sunday the convoy of police came under attack late
Saturday during a routine patrol in southern Helmand province near the
border with Pakistan. Officials say some of the victims were killed
during a gun battle, while at least six policemen were captured, then
beheaded.

The news comes a day after a purported Taleban spokesman claimed that
rebels had beheaded a U.S. Navy SEAL commando missing since June 28 in
the mountains of eastern Kunar province.

The U.S. military says it has no information to support the claim.

The Taleban, which was ousted from power by U.S.-led forces in 2001,
has stepped up attacks in the run-up to parliamentary elections in
Afghanistan due in September.
