In the first attack, officials say insurgents targeted an Iraqi National Guard checkpoint near the troubled city of Baquba, north of Baghdad, killing at least eight guardsmen. Shortly afterwards, at least seven Iraqi policemen were killed and 15 others wounded in a suicide car bomb explosion in front of a police station in the northern town of Baiji. The attacks come as insurgents continue their violent campaign to derail Iraq's national elections on January 30. The U.S. military said troops captured more than 40 suspected insurgents in raids across Iraq Sunday. Most of the suspects were captured in early morning operations in northern Iraq.
