Mr. Jennings' family says he passed away peacefully late Sunday at his home in New York. In April, Mr. Jennings went on the air one last time to announce he had lung cancer, but continued to work behind the scenes. A reporter, broadcaster and foreign correspondent, Mr. Jennings became the sole anchor of ABC television's nightly news in 1983, nearly 20 years after joining the network. He opened ABC's bureau in Beirut in 1968, and was later seen broadcasting from London as one of the network's main anchors. Mr. Jennings covered virtually every international event in the past 40 years, and earned a number of major broadcast awards. His wide global knowledge enabled him to explain complex issues to his American audience. A native of Toronto, Mr. Jennings left high school to start a career in broadcasting at an Ottawa radio station, but soon moved into television. He became an American citizen two years ago.
