Authorities say the attacks took place near Tikrit - Saddam Hussein's hometown, as well as the town of Samara. In Baquba, also north of the Iraqi capital, a roadside bomb blast wounded at least four members of the Iraqi National Guard. Officials say a senior National Guard officer survived an apparent assassination attempt, when a car bomb exploded near his home in Baghdad. At least eight guardsmen were wounded in the blast, some of them seriously.
