Schmitz Released with a typically perfunctory description, Apple has pushed out [1]iOS 6.0.2 for the iPhone 5 and iPad mini to fix 'a bug that could impact Wi-Fi.' With such a blank slate to divine from, our first guess was that this could be related to the excessive cellular data usage problem that's been documented in several articles here at TidBITS ' including Matt Neuburg's '[2]Mysterious iOS 6 Cellular Data Usage: A Deeper Look' (24 October 2012) and Glenn Fleishman's '[3]What's Behind Mysterious Cellular Data Usage in iOS 6?' (29 September 2012). However, Adam Engst came across a couple of discussion threads at Apple Support Communities that suggest this fix is meant to patch a problem with the iPhone 5 that either [4]disabled Wi-Fi completely or gave the appearance of a connection to a Wi-Fi network yet [5]received no data over Wi-Fi. If you've got workable Wi-Fi connectivity, we recommend going the over-the-air update route (go to Settings > General > Software Update on the device) as this method downloads only the deltas and are much smaller and faster to install (a 51.4 MB download for the iPhone 5 and a 32.9 MB download for the iPad mini). You can also grab the full image of iOS 6.0.2 through iTunes on your Mac (which downloads at a heftier 819 MB).
