November 19, 2024 Hong Kong Court Sentences 45 Pro-Democracy Activists in Landmark National Security Trial ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A Hong Kong court has sentenced 45 pro-democracy activists to up to 10 years in prison for their involvement in an unofficial primary election in 2020. It was the largest trial yet under the Beijing-imposed national security law. Among those convicted were prominent activists Benny Tai and Joshua Wong. This is pro-democracy activist Chan Po-ying, whose husband Leung Kwok-hung received a sentence of nearly seven years. Chan Po-ying: "Actually, the situation is quite clear. All these people are peaceful. They have always only called for people to vote, which is the most peaceful and legal method. It's shocking that the court has given such harsh sentences." .
