Brazil's Federal Police announced Friday they have launched an operation
targeting illegal miners in the Yanomami Indigenous territory, where
communities are facing a humanitarian catastrophe, largely due to the
disastrous effects of illegal gold mining, which have displaced people,
devastated the land and contaminated rivers with mercury.
