September 6, 2022 Liz Truss Becomes U.K. Prime Minister After Leadership Battle to Replace Boris Johnson -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- In Britain, the Conservative Party has elected Foreign Secretary Liz Truss to become the United Kingdom's next prime minister, replacing Boris Johnson, who stepped down following a number of scandals. Truss defeated Finance Minister Rishi Sunak in a party vote on Monday. Truss comes to power as the U.K. is facing an economic crisis with inflation and energy prices soaring. On Monday, Truss vowed to slash taxes. Liz Truss: "I will deliver a bold plan to cut taxes and grow our economy. I will deliver on the energy crisis, dealing with people's energy bills but also dealing with the long-term issues we have on energy supply."
