July 8, 2022 Federal Judge Sentences Derek Chauvin to 21 Years for Violating George Floyd's Civil Rights ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A federal judge has sentenced former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin to 21 years in prison for violating the civil rights of George Floyd. As part of a plea agreement, Chauvin also pleaded guilty to violating the civil rights of John Pope Jr., a Black teen who was just 14 years old in 2017 when Chauvin grabbed him by the throat, hit him repeatedly in the head with a flashlight and pressed his knee into the boy's neck while he was prone, handcuffed and not resisting. Chauvin will now be moved to a federal prison to serve his sentence concurrently with his 22-and-a-half-year sentence on state charges of murder and manslaughter for killing George Floyd in May 2020. .
