Israel's Yair Lapid Given Chance to Form Coalition Government After PM Netanyahu Fails

Israel's president has given opposition leader Yair Lapid a chance to
form a new government, threatening to end the rule of longtime Israeli
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Netanyahu failed to cobble together a
majority coalition after a March 23 election showed no clear winner. It
was Israel's fourth consecutive inconclusive election and came as
Netanyahu went on trial to face corruption charges. Yair Lapid has
called on Palestinians to resume peace talks - if they agree to
recognize large Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank and East
Jerusalem.
