January 21, 2021 43 Refugees Killed in Shipwreck Off Libyan Coast in First Major Mediterranean Disaster of 2021 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- At least 43 refugees were killed in a shipwreck off Libya's coast Tuesday. The deaths mark the first known tragedy of 2021 in the Mediterranean Sea, where over 20,000 have drowned since 2014, according to the U.N. Ten survivors were brought back to land, including migrants from Ivory Coast, Nigeria, Ghana and Gambia. The U.N. says the journey by sea from Libya to Europe is the most dangerous migration route in the world, and one in six people who attempt it has died. .
