February 18, 2021 U.S. Life Expectancy Falls by 1 Year in 2020, Drops Nearly 3 Years for Black Americans -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Life expectancy in the United States fell by a full year during the first six months of 2020, largely due to the coronavirus pandemic. It is the largest drop since World War II. Life expectancy for Black Americans dropped 2.7 years and 1.9 years for Latinx people. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the overall death rate from COVID-19 for Black Americans is three times higher than for white Americans. .
