Former Black Panther Russell "Maroon" Shoatz has died at the age of 78,
less than two months after being let out of prison on compassionate
release. Shoatz was jailed in connection with a 1970 attack on a
Philadelphia police station and spent 22 of his nearly half-century
behind bars in solitary confinement, becoming an outspoken prison
abolitionist.
