August 24, 2021 Haiti's Earthquake Death Toll Rises to Over 2,200 with Thousands Still Homeless ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- In Haiti, the death toll from the massive August 14 earthquake has passed 2,200, with thousands of survivors growing increasingly desperate. People left homeless by the quake have been living in squalid camps in the mountains, north of the hard-hit city of Les Cayes, where they say children are suffering from hunger, fevers and infections. Mimose Danger: "Our throats are dry because we are thirsty. We have no choice but to stay here. Children crying for water and food. We stay here because there is nothing else we can do." UNICEF says 1.2 million people were affected by the earthquake, including over half a million children. .
