Nigerian Police Orders Further Crackdown on Protests as Death Toll Mounts

Nigeria's police chief has ordered the immediate deployment of all law
enforcement resources to quell the ongoing protests against government
corruption and police brutality. Demonstrations began over three weeks
ago with calls to abolish the now dismantled Special Anti-Robbery Squad
police unit. Dozens of protesters have since been killed by security
forces. At the Vatican, Pope Francis called for an end to the violence
in Nigeria during his Sunday prayer.
