Michigan Judge Says 15-Year-Old Who Was Jailed for Not Doing Homework Should Not Be Freed

A Michigan judge ruled Monday a 15-year-old African American student who
was sent to prison after she failed to complete her schoolwork and for
reportedly fighting with her mother should not be released and that she
was benefiting from the treatment she was receiving in detention. The
girl, who is known simply as Grace, has been detained since May.
Students have rallied behind Grace and say she was disproportionately
punished because she is Black. Grace told the court Monday, "I miss my
mom."
