December 10, 2020 Minneapolis City Council Redirects $8 Million from Police Dept. in New Budget ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- In Minnesota, the Minneapolis City Council passed a budget today that redirects about $8 million from the police department. The funds will go toward violence prevention, mental health response and other services - but does not reduce the number of police officers and maintains new hiring targets, after Mayor Jacob Frey threatened to veto any staffing reductions. The budget is a far cry from the City Council's pledge this summer to dismantle the Minneapolis Police Department at the height of racial justice protests following the police killing of George Floyd. .
