Alabama Woman Was Shot While Pregnant, Then Charged with Manslaughter After Pregnancy Ended

A pregnant woman in Alabama who was shot in the stomach has been charged
with manslaughter because the shooting caused her pregnancy to end.
Marshae Jones, a 28-year-old African-American woman, was charged on
Wednesday and released Thursday after posting a $50,000 bond. Local
police accused Jones of starting the fight that led to the shooting in
the parking lot of a Dollar General store outside of Birmingham. The
case has alarmed reproductive rights activists. The National Abortion
Federation tweeted, "This is how people-especially women of color-are
already being punished & having their pregnancies criminalized." Alabama
is one of 38 states to have a fetal homicide law.
