Iraq: Gunman Shoots Novelist Alaa Mashzoub

In Iraq, an armed motorcyclist shot dead Iraqi novelist Alaa Mashzoub in
the city of Karbala Saturday. The 50-year-old author and poet was
heading home when the shooting happened, according to police. Mashzoub
was an outspoken critic of foreign intervention in Iraq, radicalism and
corruption. Iraq's writers union blamed the Iraqi government for failing
to protect public intellectuals. No group has claimed responsibility for
the murder.
