New Caledonia Rejects Independence from France

Voters in the South Pacific archipelago of New Caledonia have rejected
an independence bid and will remain a French territory. About 175,000
people were eligible to cast ballots in Sunday's referendum, which would
have made New Caledonia the world's newest nation.
