Illinois Ratifies Equal Rights Amendment

Illinois has become the 37th state to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment
guaranteeing equal rights for women. This potentially means just one
more state is now needed for the ERA to be added to the U.S.
Constitution. The proposed amendment states, "Equality of rights under
the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any
state on account of sex." The amendment was passed by Congress in 1972.
