North Carolina: Derricka Banner Becomes 20th Trans Person Murdered in 2017

And in North Carolina, police in Charlotte say they're enlisting the
help of the FBI as they investigate the murder of Derricka Banner, a
26-year-old trans woman who was found shot to death in a car Tuesday
morning. Police say they're not investigating the death as a hate crime,
because a state statute omits sexual orientation and gender identity.
Banner is at least the 20th transgender person killed in the U.S. this
year.
