Iraqi Army Tightens Control Over Kirkuk as Kurdish Forces Withdraw
------------------------------------------------------------------

In Iraq, thousands of residents fled the northern city of Kirkuk as
Kurdish fighters withdrew from government buildings and Iraqi troops
backed by Shia militias took control of most of the city of 1 million
people. The Iraqi advance came after a large majority of Kurds declared
independence from Iraq in a referendum held in late September.
