April 27, 2017 Turkey Arrests Over 1,000 and Fires 9,000 Police in Massive Purge ----------------------------------------------------------------- In Turkey, police carried out a wave of arrests at dawn on Wednesday, rounding up over 1,000 people accused of supporting dissident cleric Fethullah Gülen, who's accused by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of plotting last year's failed coup attempt. Turkish authorities said they issued more than 4,600 arrest warrants and suspended more than 9,000 police officers accused of backing Gülen, who lives in the Poconos Mountains in Pennsylvania. President Erdogan has repeatedly demanded that the U.S. extradite Gülen. Nearly 50,000 people have been arrested under emergency rule since Turkey's military failed in an attempt to oust Erdogan last July. .
