October 22, 2015 Alabama Backs Down Slightly on Plan to Shutter DMVs in Black Areas ------------------------------------------------------------------- Alabama has backed down slightly on a plan to shutter 31 driver's license offices in majority African-American areas. The planned closures came after Alabama passed a law requiring a government-issued ID to vote. Birmingham News columnist John Archibald wrote: "Every single county in which blacks make up more than 75 percent of registered voters will see their driver license office closed. Every one." Following a national outcry, Alabama Governor Robert Bentley said the offices will be reopened at least one day a month. .
