Iraq Makes Gains in Offensive to Retake Tikrit

The Iraqi military and Iranian-backed Shiite militias have seized large
parts of Tikrit as part of their offensive to retake the city from the
self-proclaimed Islamic State. The operation marks Iraq's largest
military attempt to roll back the gains made by ISIS last June. Iranian
advisers and Iranian-backed Shiite fighters are playing a key role while
the United States has been sidelined.
