July 20, 2015 Trump: McCain is "Not a War Hero" Because He Was Captured in Battle -------------------------------------------------------------------- In campaign news, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has come under intense criticism from within his own party after he spoke disparagingly about the war record of Republican Senator John Mc Cain, who was held as a prisoner of war in Vietnam for over five years. During an event in Iowa on Saturday, Trump said he did not view Mc Cain as a war hero. Donald Trump: "He is not a war hero. He is a war hero — he's a war hero because he was captured. I like people who weren't captured, OK? I hate to tell you. To you, he's a war hero. He's a war hero because he was captured." Trump has refused to apologize for his comment. Unlike Mc Cain, Trump did not serve in Vietnam. He received four student deferments between 1964 and 1968. .
