January 21, 2015 Words "Lesbian," "Bisexual" and "Transgender" Appear in State of the Union for 1st Time ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- For the first time since 2001, the State of the Union address included no mention of the word "al-Qaeda." But Obama did say three other words that made history — "lesbian," "bisexual" and "transgender" — marking the first time those words have appeared in a State of the Union address. President Obama: "That's why we defend free speech and advocate for political prisoners and condemn the persecution of women or religious minorities or people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender. We do these things not only because they are the right thing to do, but because ultimately they will make us safer." .
