December 18, 2015 New Orleans City Council Votes to Remove Confederate Monuments --------------------------------------------------------------- The New Orleans City Council has voted to remove four monuments to the Confederacy in a 6-1 vote Thursday. Officials will soon take down statutes of General Robert E. Lee, Confederate President Jefferson Davis and other monuments. It's the latest in a series of Confederate symbols to be targeted for removal from public spaces since a white supremacist killed nine African-American worshipers in Charleston, South Carolina, on June 17. New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu described Thursday's vote to remove the monuments as a "courageous decision to turn a page on our divisive past and chart the course for a more inclusive future." .
