August 20, 2015 Louis Stokes, Ohio's First African-American Congressman, Dies at 90 -------------------------------------------------------------------- And Louis Stokes, the first African-American congressmember from Ohio and a leading advocate for the poor, has died at the age of 90. Stokes served in the House of Representatives for three decades. He led a special investigation into the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. which concluded they may have involved conspiracies. Stokes was also a founder of the Congressional Black Caucus. He died of lung and brain cancer Tuesday at home in Ohio. .
