October 14, 2014 Alaska Becomes 30th State with Marriage Equality ------------------------------------------------- Alaska and North Carolina have begun issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples after courts in those states overturned bans on marriage equality. The rulings are part of the broad impact from last week's Supreme Court decision to decline appeals from states that sought to ban same-sex marriage. In 1998, Alaska became the first state to pass a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage. It has now become the 30th state where same-sex marriage is legal. .
