Peru: Environmental Defender Wins Court Victory Against U.S. Mining Firm

An environmental defender in the Andean region of Cajamarca, Peru, has
defeated the U.S. multinational Newmont Mining Corporation in court as
part of a years-long battle to keep her land. Newmont sought to evict
Maxima Acuña as part of a massive, open-pit gold mine project. She and
her relatives were initially sentenced to nearly three years in prison
after the company accused them of illegally occupying the land, but an
appeals court has cleared her of the charges.
