September 25, 2013 Brazilian President: U.S. Spying Violates International Law ------------------------------------------------------------ Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff has openly criticized U.S. spying on her government in a speech to the U.N. General Assembly. On Tuesday, Rousseff accused the United States of violating human rights and international law by spying on Brazilian companies, politicians and citizens. Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff: "We are a democratic country surrounded by nations that are democratic, pacific and respectful of international law. We have lived in peace with our neighbors for more than 140 years. As many other Latin Americans, I fought against authoritarianism and censorship, and I cannot but defend, in an uncompromising fashion, the right to privacy of individuals and the sovereignty of my country." Rousseff recently cancelled a trip to Washington in response to leaks from Edward Snowden showing the National Security Agency spied on her personal communications, as well as on Brazil’s state-run oil company, Petrobras. .
