New York City to Raise Age for Buying Cigarettes to 21

The New York City Council has approved a measure raising the age for
buying cigarettes from 18 to 21. Mayor Michael Bloomberg has pledged to
sign the bill. New York is the first major city to take such action
following similar measures in smaller municipalities. The council also
approved setting a minimum price of $10.50 a pack for cigarettes.
