Romania Rejects Gold Mine Project After Mass Protests

The Romanian government has rejected a Canadian firm's plan to build
what would have become Europe's largest open gold mine. According to the
Associated Press, the plan included "razing four mountains and creating
a lake of cyanide." Romanians had staged mass protests against the mine,
saying the cyanide used in the mining process could poison animals and
water supplies.
