Ivory Coast: 61 Killed in Stampede

In Ivory Coast, at least 61 people were crushed to death in a stampede
following a New Year’s fireworks show. Witnesses said police had tried
to control a crowd of thousands pouring out of a stadium in the city of
Abidjan. Scores of people were injured. Most of the dead were children
and teenagers. The fireworks display was planned by the government to
celebrate peace after months of violence following disputed elections in
2011.
