September 4, 2012 Anti-Coup Protests Grow in Maldives ------------------------------------ Unrest is growing in the Maldives in the conflict between the government and supporters of the ousted President Mohamed Nasheed. On Friday, state forces cracked down on a protest of thousands of people led by Nasheed calling for early elections. Tension have flared since last week when a Commonwealth-back panel rejected Nasheed's claims of having been overthrown in a coup at gunpoint earlier this year. Nasheed is well-known internationally for his activism around the issue of global warming, which he says threatens the survival of his small island country. .
