June 5, 2012 Bid for New Authority by Special Operations Command Rejected ------------------------------------------------------------- The U.S. State Department and Congress have rejected a bid by the military’s Special Operations Command to expand its authority to train and and equip forces overseas. The decision is seen as a rare rejection of a request by the command’s influential lead officer, Admiral William Mc Raven, who oversaw the raid that killed Osama bin Laden last year. Lawmakers said the command was moving too fast in the recent bid to expand its powers. The attempt is reportedly part of a broader goal by Mc Raven to gain new authority to deploy special forces outside normal channels. .
