August 14, 2012 Ecuador to Reveal Decision on Julian Assange’s Asylum Bid This Week ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Ecuadorean President Rafael Correa has announced his government will likely reveal this week whether it plans to grant Wiki Leaks founder Julian Assange political asylum. Assange has taken refuge in the Ecuadorean embassy in London in a bid to avoid extradition to Sweden and ultimately, he says, to the United States. On Monday, Correa said a decision is pending after heavy deliberation. President Rafael Correa: "I've read reports that say, 'Why are we taking so long?' The process has to be revised, the position of the United States must be looked at ... that there will be a secret tribunal over there, that there could be the death penalty. This requires a great amount of information and we have to analyze international law in order to take an informed decision that is completely responsible, and obviously, a sovereign decision." .
