October 5, 2011 Greeks Stage General Strike Over Austerity Cuts ------------------------------------------------ In Greece, tens of thousands of people have begun a 24-hour general strike in response to deeply unpopular austerity cuts. Trains, schools and courthouses have been crippled by the mass walkout, while hospitals have been forced to rely on emergency staffing. International travel has been halted and public transportation slowed down. The strike was called by Greece’s two main labor unions, which represent some 2.5 million workers. .
