July 21, 2011 Judge Allows Closure of Vermont Yankee Nuclear Plant ----------------------------------------------------- A federal judge has blocked efforts to stop Vermont from shutting down the Vermont Yankee nuclear power plant when the facility’s original 40-year contract license expires next year. Enetergy Corp, the second largest nuclear power plant operator in the United States, has attempted to thwart the Vermont state legislature's effort to close the plant. The Vermont Yankee is one of the oldest in the country and has had a series of leaks. Its closure marks the first time a state has moved to shut down a reactor in more than 20 years. .
